Texture Tape 023:

Tip Top

Interview by

Setting the tone with some sweet slow jams, the Newcastle-based DJ dives deep as he drifts between floaty cruisers and chunky house groovers. Get on it.

What were your ideas or plans going into the mix?

I wanted this mix to reflect how I (generally) listen to music. I have a tendency (that I am currently trying to quash) to move too quickly from mellower tunes from different genres to the side of the House spectrum I play at gigs which is inconsistent with how I listen to music outside of the ‘partysphere’. Obviously electronic music is what gets me going when I’m on a dance floor, but the music that I find myself having a stronger emotional response to is generally not club suitable. I wanted to shed light on some of those tracks whilst also delivering a couple of bouncy numbers for a foot tap.

What have been your favourite recent releases or events?

Releases wise I would have to say:

Small Hours 002. Four absolutely killer tracks.

Gene on Earths LP Local Fuzz (Limousine Dream) . A perfect mix of the loungier and the larger beats.

Dat 91-99 (Klasse Wrecks). They’ve repressed four Boys from Charris tracks and yeah, they’re pretty tight.

LOVEPLAYDANCE by Toshio Matsuura Group (Brownswood Recordings). I know it’s not super recent but it is timeless music.

Events:

I went to my first Point in summer which was epic. It was under some railway arches in Pudding Mill. The beats were hot and there were some serious shapes being thrown by the punters. It was a night to remember. Nearly got shut down twice, the power kept cutting and the loo’s emitted the most offensive smell I have ever consumed – people were throwing up because of it from about 30 feet away.

What’s the music scene like where you’re from??

I hail from the home county town of Winchester. As most people say ‘it has a lovely cathedral’ which says it all really.

Is there a show you would love to go back in time and experience again?

I went to Nodd Club with my friend Max this summer. Saw some of my favourite DJ’s spin and ended up hanging out with them for most of the night so that.

Or Houghton 2019…

How do you organise your music?

I don’t.

My vinyl are sorted in a rough order of when I might play them but I am yet to bring them all out so that is fairly obsolete.

A track you’ve always wanted to play out but never had the chance?

Marschmellows – ‘Reloaded’. Wouldn’t gel with my sounds but I think it’s an absolute gem.

Your dancefloor saver?

Chaser – ‘Destination Unknown’. Always seems to go down a treat. Not sure though. I would say it depends on the crowd.

Your favourite club?

I have had some wicked nights at Cobalt Studios in Newcastle. The physical set up is perfect for mischief, it boasts a rocking sound system and all the staff are friendly which is a big thing for me.

The soundtrack to your funeral?

Nick Drake – ‘Road’. Tear to the eye kinda shit.

And on a lighter note, the tune you’ll still be listening to in 50 years?

Tough one… but probably The Clash – ‘The Magnificent Seven’. It has been my jam since the age of 9 and will never fail to make me feel like a real rock and roller.

Lastly, any projects to look out for?

A friend and I are starting up a party called Contours. The first one which is soon to be announced is on December 21st at Grow Tottenham. We have some wicked DJ’s playing and are putting lots of time into the décor so it should be fun.

I have also just started up my own label, ‘Blueprints’, so anyone interested check it out and feel free to ping over any demos.
